Mangrove Rehabilitation Community Extension Project

Mangrove rehabilitation community extension project

Its been a long time since I have not posted an article in my blog. In this article I will just share with you how important mangrove is in our community. This is based on my experience when I visited communities that have manage mangroves very well and also as a result from our research.

Fortunately, my colleague Dr. Malabarbas, an active environmentalist is conducting a mangrove rehabilitation community extension project as requested by a community leader in Brgy. Maguinoo, Calbayog City.

The  leader asked our help to promote mangrove rehabilitation and awareness in their community.

It was inspiring to think that this leader is still very active despite his age and physical condition. He also received some awards before as a leader in their community  because of his advocate and strict implementation of environmental policies.  No wonder why he has this concern over their mangrove area which today is not anymore observable.

But, why mangrove rehabilitation?

A rumor spread out after Typhoon Yolanda struck the Islands of Leyte and Samar last 2013 that one island village was spared because of the presence of mangroves.

Indeed, mangroves can save lives of hundreds of people.

However, today, that are less mangroves than we have before.

In a report from Panda Organization:

35% of mangrove in the world are already gone.

Causes and Threats of Mangrove Deforestation

Some of the causes of the massive destruction of mangroves are the following:

Clearing, over harvesting, river changes, over fishing, destruction of coral reefs, climate change and pollution. Other reasons also include urbanization, conversion to agriculture and aquaculture development.

What are the benefits that we can get from mangroves?

Economic and ecological benefits derived from mangroves

We have so many economic and ecological benefits that can be derived from mangroves.

Economic benefits:

  • Provides recreation and tourism.
  • Source of timber and charcoal.
  • Improves fish catch
  • Also provide medicinal value (e.g. herbal medicines for local communities)
  • Potential source of livelihood to communities who are willing to protect the mangroves.

Ecological benefits:

  • A nursery ground for wildlife species.
  • Helps lessen the effect of green house gases
  • Prevents siltation and soil erosion.
  • Collects heavy metals from industrial waste

There are myriad benefits that we can get from mangroves, however, people neglect this one because they don’t see the indirect use values of it.

Many think of what they can get from this resource without considering what will happen in the future.

If only people learn to value our natural resources, our grand children will see the beauty of what we have enjoyed before.

How you can help mangrove rehabilitation?

There are many ways to help promote mangrove rehabilitation in your community.

Seminar-Orientation

In our case, we had an initial mangrove orientation and seminar. In here we discuss the ecological and economic benefits of mangroves as you have read from above. The mangrove rehabilitation awareness was attended by community officials and residents with the Environmental Management students.

Tree planting of mangrove species suitable to your area

After orientation and seminar, ocular inspection and testing of water salinity was conducted. Then the community may now proceed to mangrove tree planting. In case you worry about the seedlings, CENRO may provide you with it. In our case, we have coordinated with our CENRO officials and agreed to provide us materials for free.

FYI: Do you know that cutting of mangrove trees is punishable in our law?

Section 68.Cutting, gathering and/or collecting timber or other products without license. Any person who shall cut, gather, collect, or remove timber or other forest products from any forest land, or timber from alienable and disposable public lands, or from private lands, without any authority under a license agreement, lease, license or permit, shall be guilty of qualified theft as defined and punished under Articles 309 and 310 of the Revised Penal Code; Provided, That in the case of partnership, association or corporation, the officers who ordered the cutting, gathering or collecting shall be liable, and if such officers are aliens, they shall, in addition to the penalty, be deported without further proceedings on the part of the Commission on Immigration and Deportation. P.D. No. 705

Monitoring

This is the most important aspect of the community extension project because not all are successful because they don’t have this monitoring of their project.

Next steps…

Mangroves are indeed helpful in our community, the only thing we need is to manage it so that our children in the future will enjoy what we have today.

If you want to save lives, protect our mangroves.
